PhD in MIS - Curriculum

Course Work

The course work in the program must total at least 60 semester credit hours past the bachelor's degree, exclusive of any leveling work required or enrollment in BA 8000, the doctoral dissertation course. A Ph.D. student is required to enroll in 21 hours each calendar year with a minimum of 9 hours and a maximum of 12 hours each long semester.

There is no requirement for a foreign language. The student who is successful continuously at each step in progress should complete degree requirements in about 4-5 years of full-time study beyond the master's degree.

Leveling Courses

Doctoral students who do not have proper business background will need to take leveling courses, including:

Background MIS courses

Students without prior background in MIS must take at least three courses in the MIS master's curriculum.

Tool Courses

Early in the program each student must satisfy tool requirements -- through course work with a minimum grade of B -- in advanced statistics and organizational economics. Tools courses include:

MIS Seminar Courses

Seminar courses involve reading and discussing important MIS articles and writing at least one paper. Five seminar courses in MIS are required:

ISQS 7347 Managerial and Organizational MIS Research
ISQS 7342 Advanced Topic: Academic Writing and Publication
ISQS 7342 Advanced Topic: (topic approved by ISQS Doctoral Committee)

Supporting Fields

Students are required to take two supporting fields of at least nine hours each or one supporting field of at least fifteen hours. The purpose of the supporting fields is to provide skills and knowldge that support the sutdent's research work such as knowledge in a reference discipline. BA 7000 classes do not count toward the supporting field. For a transferred course to count it would need to fill the role of a supporting field (i.e., research knowledge) and be approved by the student's adviser; transferred credits do not typically count toward the supporting field.

Courses counted toward the minimum data analysis methods requirement above cannot also be counted as supporting field courses. Statistics courses beyong this minimum are not usually counted as part of a supporting field but can be counted as such on the recommendation of the student's adviser if the adviser deems the statistics course(s) to be part of a coherent supporting field.


The curriculum and overall plan of the Ph.D. program were designed to enable students to join the culture of academia as rapidly as possible. To this end, several seminar courses require research papers. Students with assistantships work as both research assistants and teaching assistants and there is an emphasis on co-authoring manuscripts with faculty members, with the goal of submitting manuscripts to top academic journals. In recent years our students have been very successful at this. All students are required to take a three hour course about university level teaching and we strive to have every student teach at least one course during his or her tenure at the college. Students attend workshops in which visiting or local researchers present current research. Periodically, the area holds an ISQS Doctoral Retreat at which faculty and students share information about research plans and activities.
